There are many ways that you can support your lymphatic system. It plays a crucial role in our overall health. The Lymphatic system is often overlooked, and underutilised for creating our own daily wellness routine and putting our health in our own hands. The Lymphatic system’s three main functions are:
Maintaining the body’s fluid level
Transport of protein and fats
Conducts surveillance for the immune system by filtering and identifying all toxins and pathogens
One of the interesting facts about the Lymphatic system is that it does not have a pump, unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart. The Lymphatic system also runs linear, against gravity. How does it work then? It flows through movement of fascia tissue. Any movement will do, just wake up and jump around, the lymphatic system will thank you for it! As I have learnt from Kelly Kennedy of the True Wellness centre, there are 3 main things that you can do to support your lymphatic system.
Remove Cow Dairy
Okay, not so popular, I know, but trust me, cow dairy slows down and blocks your lymphatic system. Our digestive tract is very different to that of a cow, and we cannot digest these products. We can only process about 60g of protein a day, the rest is stored in the lymphatics and the gut. Cow dairy has so much protein it ends up coating our sinus, lungs and gut with pus and mucus. Yuk!! Cow dairy is an inflammatory food and turns our lymph fluid into a ricotta cheese type consistency, whereas it is meant to be clear and flowing. Give it up for just 21 days and see how you feel. I know you will feel so much better, and your body will thank you for it!
2. Stop wearing Restrictive Clothing
Tight clothes, from socks that leave indentations on your skin, to tight jeans and underwear, and even an underwire bra, cause blockages in the lymphatic system. Hey, I’m not saying throw away all your clothes and start again, but if you need to wear an underwire bra, rip it off as soon as you get home! The positioning of that wire is right at one of our major lymphatic sites and cuts of the ability to clear toxins right at the breast!
Tight yoga pants, tight tops, spanx and stockings, all restrict the movement of the lymphatic system. Just be aware, as I said, no need to rush out and buy a new wardrobe, but maybe have it in your mind when shopping for new clothes.
3. Living a Sedentary lifestyle
A forensic scientist named Gil Headley, taught us that movement is critical to lessening the FUZZ! The Fuzz builds up overnight between the fascia and the muscles, think of it as like peach fuzz on a teenage boy. We need to disperse this each day, so it doesn’t get thicker and thicker, restricting movement and causing imbalances in the body. He has a great you tube video that you can watch, but please be aware it is not for everyone, looking at cadavers can be unpleasant. Movement, in a nutshell, is critical to our wellbeing. It doesn’t have to be structured or organised. Good old get up and groove to a song on the radio works great! A walk in the early morning sunshine, a few stretches throughout the day, is all it takes. Be aware that after being seated for a while, you should get up and move, it all helps the body and the Lymphatic system.
